Honk For Our U.S. Troops

Honk For Our U.S. Troops!

This photo appeared on the front page of the Duluth News-Tribune, January 18, 1991
Photo caption: Tony Rogers of Duluth was one of five neighbors on West Arrowhead Road who shared time Wednesday alongside a sign and a handy Old Glory to show support for the U.S. military effort in the Persian Gulf war. All five involved in the roadside vigil are students at UMD. They said they did it because they knew people in the Duluth-based 109th Light Equipment Maintenance Company of the Minnesota Army National Guard, which was deployed to Saudi Arabia two months ago. Tony's Notes: If I remember properly, we had a nearby pickup truck tailgate full of cocktail mix and were in about our 16th hour of fun after this idea was first hatched the night before. Ben had the fortune to get interviewed on camera by a local TV station. I ended up properly shielded behind sunglasses in a static photo.

The story continued inside the newspaper:

The car started honking a quarter-mile away. The honking crescendoed as the car sped past, then faded like the whistle on a passing train.

Tony Rogers kept waving his American flag. "Beautiful," he said.

"Everybody else out there was doing protests," said Rogers. "We thought, 'Why not show our support?"

A lot of people honked at us, man...
