Lang - Sporting a Beard in Afghanistan
I got this photo of Mike from his
family and friends on January 8, 2004. Mike was our hut-mate at the Camp
Perry National Matches in 2002. Steve and John Marden
and I were randomly assigned with him in a hut on our
first year there. He taught us more about the M1 Garand
than we all thought we knew combined! He was unable to
make it to the 2003
National Matches because he was pulled overseas for
civilian duty in the Middle East. He is pictured here
at a bazaar outside of an undisclosed air base in Afghanistan. Hoping to see him at the 2004 Camp Perry
National Matches! See his recent
correspondence, below, that he just sent me on
February 13, 2004. |
February 13, 2004 Message From
Michael:
Well Tony, I just got
back from the Middle East and finally got a chance to
see the web site of yours. Cool picture of a gray
bearded man in the middle of no where. That picture was
taken by my cousin at the local bazaar. The bazaar is
held at the end of the camp and the locals sell us
everything from silk rugs to gold and precious stones.
If you are careful, you can pick up a few bargains. The
base commanders close the bazaar from time to time when
the local bad guys set off bombs or send in the odd
rocket or two. Right about now I'm getting packed to go
over for another 6-month tour. The e-mail system there
is limited in size due to the sheer volume of traffic.
The place is not too awful, but there is nothing to do
over there. You work and you eat and you sleep, that's
it. I'm hoping to get to the National
Matches this year, but my return date is not set.
I'm supposed to return in late July or early August.
Hope to get a chance to see you all there. We might kick
some serious butt at the Rattle
Battle this year. Well that's all from here, hope
this note finds you and yours well and happy. Thanks
again for the support and prayers.
Later,
Michael
