John Beargrease Sled Dog Race - 2008
Ordean Middle School Field - The Start
Duluth, MN

January 27, 2008

Spectators and Enthusiasts walking along the staged dog sled teams on Superior Street. Teams checking on their sleds and getting ready to stage on Superior Street.
Dogs, mushers and handlers prepping... Dogs being friendly
I took this photo just minutes before the first team to test my camera's exposure levels for the first team, but it was worthy of posting.. The first team out of the gate, Matt Rossi, from Herbster, Wisconsin.
Matt Rossi and his enthusiastic dog team! Matt Rossi and his sled...

A rear view of the very cool LifeFlight SMDC rescue helicopter, which was on display. The LifeFlight SMDC rescue helicopter was there for public view because SMDC was a big sponsor of the race, and they are commended.
This dog is rip-roaring ready to go, and made his point vocally very clear! His partner behind him started howling, too!
Calm, yet VERY excited... Knows her race is coming up, and wants to run
Note how some teams seem to have matching dogs?
"I see the starting line, man!" No worries...
This dog just looks fast... Properly anchored to a heavy truck axle...
Note the brakes that the humans have to put on the dogs... If there were not ten people, these dogs would GO!!!
Teammates Whoa! Whoa!
Still trying to whoa the excited team! Casual corner...

Hard to tell which dog is part of what!!!

John Beargrease photoThe John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon commemorates the life of John Beargrease (right), the son of a Chippewa chief who delivered mail by dog sled along Lake Superior’s rugged North Shore in the late 19th century.

John Beargrease’s weekly deliveries along the North Shore played a pivotal role providing a lifeline for communities and commerce.

Launched in 1981, the Beargrease is the premier sled dog race of the Upper Midwest, drawing world-class sled dog teams from across the nation and around the globe. The Beargrease is the longest and most challenging of sled dog events in the lower 48 states.

The Beargrease is widely respected as the sled dog race to prepare national and international sled dog teams – and is a qualifying race for Alaska’s long distance Iditarod.
